Ministry Opportunities
As the body of Christ, we want to continually grow into the character of Christ in order to walk closely with God and shine as lights in our community. Jesus' own life gives us a biblical model for this growth. In Luke 2:52, we see that, "…Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men."
It is our desire that each member individually, and our congregation as a whole, grow to be like Jesus. At Champions, we have five ministry areas to help us grow in Christ likeness:
~ 1 Corinthians 12:27
Worship — Deepening Our Relationship with the Father
At the Church of Christ in Champions, we use the following ministries as tools to help us grow in favor with God.
- Audio/Visual Team: This team is responsible for the A/V equipment that is used during our assemblies. PowerPoint slides, microphones, and recording of the sermons are all handled by members of this team.
- Communion Meditation: An opportunity for men to share some brief thoughts that help the congregation prepare our hearts and minds for the Lord’s Supper and for leading the prayers before each element of communion.
- Communion to Shut-ins: An opportunity for those who are willing to take communion to the nursing home or the hospital.
- Communion Preparation: Each week the communion trays must be prepared with the bread and the fruit of the vine for each week’s observance of the Lord’s Supper. Usually done on Friday or Saturday, this ministry requires you to come up to the building and place communion bread in each tray and fill the cups with grape juice. We generally ask individuals or families to commit to one month of communion preparation a year, but we always need people willing to fill in during vacations or illness if you can only help occasionally.
- Devotional Talk: An opportunity for men to share a short devotional thought with the congregation. On the first Sunday night of each month (singing night), we conclude with a five minute Bible thought. Each Wednesday evening, men are asked to share a brief three minute thought from Scripture.
- Greeter: An opportunity for those who are willing to spend a few minutes before each Bible class and service greeting people as they enter.
- Nursery Attendant: An opportunity for those willing to care for infants through 2-year-olds in the nursery during our Sunday morning worship. Those serving in this area must have completed a child safety check.*
- Prayer: An opportunity for men to lead the congregation in prayer during one of our service times.
- Read Scripture: An opportunity for men willing to read the selected scripture before the congregation.
- Song Leading: An opportunity for men with a willingness to lead the congregation in singing during one of our service times.
- Serve Communion: An opportunity for men to be a part of a team of men who pass the trays during the communion portion of our worship on Sunday mornings and Sunday evenings. A brief instructional meeting is held each Sunday morning before worship for those serving each week.
- Take Attendance: An opportunity for those willing to help track member and visitor attendance.
- Usher: An opportunity for those who are willing to help guests find a place to sit during our worship.
- Visitor Center Worker: An opportunity for those willing to answer questions and hand out material at our Visitors Center.
- Worship Coordinator: An opportunity for men willing to organize and coordinate the men involved in serving during our worship assemblies.
Education — Learning About Jesus
At the Church of Christ in Champions, we use the following ministries as tools to help us grow in wisdom.
- Bible Classes: Champions is committed to imprinting the Word of God on our hearts as we grow to be more like Jesus. This effort takes a large team of people each Sunday morning and Wednesday night to work in our Bible classes. Teachers prepare and present the lesson from the Bible. Helpers assist the teachers and serve as back-ups in the classroom. Substitutes are volunteers who are willing to step in and teach or help during vacations, illnesses, or emergencies. Class hosts welcome people to the adult classes, pass out materials, and begin the class time with prayer and relevant announcements. Champions offers Bible classes for all ages on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. These classes include: Cradle Roll, Pre-school, Elementary, Jr./Sr. High, General Adult, Women, and Men. Those serving with children in this area must have completed a child safety check.*
- Bible Hour: Bible Hour is a special Bible-based program for our two-year-olds through second graders on Sunday evenings during the sermon time. People are needed to teach, assist, and fill in as substitutes. Those serving in this area must have completed a child safety check.*
- Library: The library at Champions holds resource books for anyone in the congregation to use for personal study. Help is needed in sorting and shelving books, organizing library resources, and evaluating new needs for the library.
- Workroom: The workroom at Champions is a resource center for our Bible class teachers. Help is needed with organization, creating new materials, copying, filing, and pulling and putting together resources for our teachers.
- Vacation Bible School: VBS opens our doors for children ages 3-11 to learn about Jesus. Lots of helpers are needed to transform our building into an exciting sensory rich experience that imprints the Word of God deeply into the hearts of children. People are needed to teach one lesson throughout the week, be a teacher's helper, work in crafts, play outdoor games, design, build, and paint backdrops and teaching props, color, cut, and create materials, and other jobs like serving cookies and registration. Those serving in this area must have completed a child safety check.*
- Leadership Training for Christ: LTC trains our young people to develop skills that will help them serve as leaders in church as they mature and grow in Christ. Each year our 3rd-12th graders commit themselves to learning and honing their talents, and they need adult coaches and mentors to give them guidance and cheer them on. Coordinators are needed to help with the organizational details of LTC. Coaches and assistants are needed in individual event areas such as song leading, speech, puppets, bulletin boards, Bible Bowl, etc. Those serving in this area must have completed a child safety check.*
- Retreats: Help plan the yearly men, women, youth, or family retreats that provide an opportunity for these different fellowship groups to more deeply connect their bonds in Christ.
Outreach — Lifting Jesus Up
At the Church of Christ in Champions, we use the following ministries as tools to help us grow in favor with man.
- Benevolence Efforts: This ministry area evaluates and meets the specific needs of those who come to us for help with their physical needs.
- Children's Homes: Champions supports three different children's homes – Medina, Sunny Glen, and Boles homes. This ministry area organizes and sponsors ways for the congregation to support the children's homes throughout the year through coin drives, food and clothing collections, Christmas gifts, and special contributions.
- Eden Brook Services: Each week Champions hosts a worship service at Eden Brook, the full care nursing facility next door to our building. People are needed to help residents to and from the services, to sit with them during services, and to help with different elements of the service.
- Emergency Response Team: There are times when our friends, family, and our community need special help. This ministry area is an "on call" ministry designed to reach out to those who experience emergency situations such as fire, flood, and auto accidents.
- Evangelism: Champions is building a team of people who have a heart to reach out to the lost in our community. This ministry includes door knocking, praying for specific evangelism opportunities, or working on the organizational details involved in reaching our neighbors with the gospel.
- Food Pantry: Champions offers a food pantry for those who need help. This ministry helps to organize the food pantry and makes the congregation aware of what is needed to stock the food pantry.
- Hearthstone Services: On the first Sunday afternoon of each month, Champions hosts a worship service at the Hearthstone nursing home. People are needed to sit with residents during the services and to help with different elements of the service.
- Impact Houston: Champions supports Impact Houston, a congregation dedicated to sharing Jesus with Houston's inner city residents, by providing a meal once a year.
- Missions Efforts: Champions' heart for sharing the Good News of Jesus stretches all around the globe. The missions team focuses on keeping in contact with the large number of missionaries we support around the world, evaluating and meeting their ongoing needs, evaluating new requests for mission support, and keeping the congregation informed of the way God is working among those who are sharing the gospel. This team has two areas of focus – domestic (within the United States) and foreign (outside of the United States).
- Mother's Day Out: Our Little Champs MDO program is a Tuesday/Thursday school that opens our doors to the community and allows us to share Jesus with our youngest neighbors and their families.
- Neighborhood Bible Studies: Neighborhood Bible studies take place each fall on Tuesday evenings in September and October. They provide a unique opportunity to invite friends and guests to study the Bible in a relaxed and informal environment. Hosts open their homes for the Bible studies. Those willing to provide refreshments bring a light snack each week to the study. Teachers lead the Bible discussion.
- One to One Bible Studies: People want to study the Bible. The evangelism team is dedicated to matching up those who want to study with people who are willing to lead a one to one Bible study. This ministry helps interested people see Jesus by participating in this ministry.
- Personal Visits to Our Guests: Our visitation team makes a point to contact each person from the local area who comes to visit at Champions to let them know that we are honored by their visit and to answer any questions they may have about our services and the church.
- TLC Teacher (New Christian Follow-up): This ministry helps new Christians become cemented in the faith through a series of studies. A TLC teacher takes a turn teaching 1 of 13 lessons to a new believer about life as a Christian, the basics about the church, and how to grow in the Lord. This is a great opportunity to connect to our new brothers and sisters in Christ.
- Provide food for those in need: During times of illness, bereavement, or personal struggle a warm meal and a friendly smile can go a long way to making the day brighter. Persons signing up for this ministry area will be contacted by the monthly food coordinator to make a meal or part of a meal as needs arise.
- Prison Ministry: Be a part of a monthly team of either men or women who go to local prison facilities and share the gospel with the inmates.
- World Bible School: WBS is a Bible correspondence school in which students are mailed Bible studies and return them via mail or e-mail for correction and encouragement.
